What is Brilliant Solutions?

Brilliant Solutions is a unique new work-integrated learning program for undergraduate students, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, launching in September 2019. 

How is Brilliant Solutions different from a co-op or internship?

Brilliant Solutions is recruiting talented students (undergraduate and graduate) and post doctoral fellows  for multidisciplinary, cross-faculty teams. Those selected for the program will work collaboratively with business leaders to generate concrete solutions to challenging problems faced by some of the largest employers in Durham Region.  Post Doctoral Fellows are invited to lead these multidisciplinary teams of students.

Successful candidates will:

  • Gain real-world work experience while at Ontario Tech University.

  • Build contacts with business leaders in some of Durham Region’s most important public, private and not-for-profit organizations.

  • Strengthen and apply your transferable skills.

  • Receive intensive training designed to prepare you for the workplace. 

  • Take advantage of flexible project terms that last a few weeks to a full year.

  • Receive mentorship from experts at Ontario Tech and its partner organizations throughout your term.

  • Receive a monetary award for your participation.


  • Brilliant Solutions is open to all undergraduate (in 2nd year and above), graduate students and post doctoral fellows.

  • Students are required to have and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 and be in clear standing to remain eligible for Brilliant Solutions.

  •  International students may be eligible to apply depending on project requirements. International students must be full-time students with a valid study permit.

  • Brilliant Solutions projects are a professional experience from start to finish. Well prepared materials and thoughtful, focused answers on the application form will be important to your success in this competitive process.

  • Ontariotechu.net (formerly UOIT.NET) email account: You will need to log in to your Ontariotechu.net email account to gain access to Brilliant Solutions documents and application forms. All undergraduates and graduates have an Ontariotechu.net email account. If you are a post doctoral fellow and do not have an Ontariotechu.net account please press HERE to apply.

  • If you are offered a role, you may be required to provide proof of immunization and/or obtain a criminal reference check. For details see here.

  • If you are offered a role, you may be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement and an Intellectual Property Agreement.

Monetary Awards

Every project participant will receive a Brilliant Solutions monetary award. The value will be based on the duration of the project as follows:

  1. Ontario Tech Brilliant Solutions Leadership Award for Post Doctoral Fellows (Post Doc Fellow awards range from $300 to $4800)

  2. Ontario Tech Brilliant Solutions Award for Graduate and Undergraduate Students (Undergrad awards range from $100 to $1600; Graduate awards range from $150 to $3200)
